Donald Chambers is a fire instructor and consultant with 20 years of firefighting experience and a strong background in communications and teaching. That's the short answer. Read on for the long answer.
He began his training in writing and public speaking at The Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut. Continuing his education at American University in Washington, DC, in English and international relations, he then transferred to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, from which he graduated with a BA, major in English, minor in journalism.
His presentation skills were utilized during a four-year Navy tour with an assignment to the Commander, Submarine Flotilla Six in Charleston, SC. This command oversaw squadrons of fast-attack as well as fleet ballistic-missile nuclear submarines in the U.S. and abroad. Don's assignments included writing submarine operations orders for training evolutions, as well as communications and intelligence briefings. His performance was acknowledged with a personal commendation by the admiral, ComSubFlotSix, upon leaving the Navy.
Returning to civilian life, Don's work in special education, particularly with emotionally disturbed adolescents, led him to a MAT program at the Military College of the South (The Citadel), and included classroom management and curriculum design. He continued his studies in a M.Ed. program at Boston University, which included student learning styles, clinical and perceptual psychology, as well as testing and evaluation.
Don entered the fire service in the 1980s, and has supplemented his training in New Hampshire with hands-on training at the FDIC as well as the Industrial Fire School at Louisiana State University.
An adjunct instructor at regional and state fire academies throughout the Northeast, Don has been a presenter at annual conferences sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) and the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs. He has been an on-site instructor for paid and volunteer fire departments from Maine to California.
Don keeps fit by jogging, cross-country skiing, biking and weight training. You can find more details about Don's credentials and background and colleagues on LinkedIn.
